Choosing an EAP whose philosophy and design match the specific needs of your organization is critical. Consider multiple factors when selecting your EAP: level of training, areas of expertise, and experience of clinical staff, performance record, range of services offered, hours of operation, location of offices, turnaround time for appointments, provider network, and access to emergency assistance. Duke EAP was created, not simply to meet, but to surpass industry standards and provide you with the highest quality of services for your investment.
Distinguished History of EAP Service
Duke has a distinguished EAP record of quality and comprehensive services. We have substantial experience working with both large and small local, regional, and national organizations. Our conveniently situated local offices, our extensive national network, and our 24-hour telephone service can provide the coverage your employees deserve.
Experienced, Dedicated Clinicians
Diamonds are judged by the four "C's": cut, color, clarity and carat; fine wines are distinguished by by their age, appearance and "nose." The critical standard for an employee assistance program is its staff. Providers for Duke EAP are licensed professionals who have been credentialed and carefully screened. Our providers have a minimum of a master's degree in an allied mental health field. Most of our mental health providers are doctoral level licensed clinical or counseling psychologists and master's or doctoral level social workers. Duke's commitment to selecting staff with the highest levels of training, experience in a broad spectrum of mental health issues, and impeccable records ensures the provision of superior mental health services for corporate employees and their immediate family members.
On-site, Local, and National Services
Duke can provide services to your employees and their immediate family members through on-site services, through our local network, and/or through our extended provider network dispersed throughout the United States.
Unblemished Confidentiality and Liability Record
Duke EAP staff are proud of our spotless confidentiality and liability record. Knowing that confidentiality is the foundation on which an EAP is built, we carefully adhere to professional standards of ethics and confidentiality to protect our clients' confidentiality to the fullest extent permitted by law. Except for cases of imminent danger to self/other/s, or in circumstances where reporting information is required by law or legal process, no information of any kind can be released without the written consent of the client (or, in the case of a minor, the parent/legal guardian).
Long-term Partnerships with Professional Organizations
In 1982 Duke University Medical Center developed an Employee Assistance Program to serve the needs of its employees and their immediate family members. Three years later the EAP expanded its services to include other businesses in the area. Since 1985, Duke EAP has maintained long-term relationships with professional organizations utilizing our EAP services. In general, companies that contract with Duke EAP enjoy a long-standing relationship with Duke. Those who elect to terminate their relationship usually do so as a result of extenuating circumstances such as mergers, buyouts, or closings, not for quality of service concerns.

Customized Programming
Collaborating with your company's management, Duke professional staff will design an individually tailored program, assist you in implementing and periodically evaluating the program, and suggest appropriate changes and adaptations. The range of services we provide to companies both locally and nationally include assistance in developing EAP and substance abuse policies, program orientation and training, seminars/talks, clinical services such as assessment, brief treatment, and referral, and increasingly, a range of "managed care services" such as benefit design consultation, incentivized gatekeeper EAPs, and case management. To respond effectively to our clients' needs, we have assembled a staff comprised of our local Duke clinicians as well as an "open" network of EAP counselors throughout the United States. In addition, we have developed customized, high quality provider networks for several of our corporate clients. We invite you to talk with us about your distinctive situation to ascertain which services/s best meet the needs of your organization.
Expertise in Network Development
Our external provider network now includes more than 4,700 providers who have been credentialed and periodically re-credentialed for license and liability verification. We are also able to provide additional access through a much larger database of clinicians who have completed American Psychological Association (APA) approved PhD training and internships in counseling or clinical psychology, specialty boarding though American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP), credentialing though the National Register, or Accredited Clinical Social Worker (ACSW) certification.
In working with our corporate clients, we continue to customize our network to provide customer-focused access to providers who meet our standards. We have repeatedly demonstrated our capability to provide on-site and remote site services in rural areas including Alabama, Tennessee, and Maine. We can coordinate with your designated management team at both a corporate and local level to establish customized service systems best suited to your organization's preferences.
Commitment to Professional Training & Advancing the Field of Occupational Mental Health
Duke's Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine is the first clinical training site in the nation to be awarded an Occupational Mental Health postdoctoral fellowship, funded jointly by the American Psychological Association (APA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Not only did the program of Occupational Mental Health obtain first year funding, but our efforts garnered us additional funding for a total of four consecutive years (August 1994 - August 1998). Although APA and NIOSH elected to stop funding any training in this area as of August 1998, Duke continues to fund a postdoctoral student on a yearly basis. Our mission is not only to provide services in the area of Occupational Mental Health, but also to ensure that individuals have an opportunity to receive specific training in this area.
Duke's Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine has also provided training in the art of doctoring to Community and Family Medicine residents. Working with them on their Behavioral Medicine rotation, Duke clinicians have assisted these doctors in dealing with the psychosocial aspects of disease, and focused on topics such as establishing doctor-patient rapport, honing interviewing skills, assessing for psychological distress, familial dynamics, and social support, and learning when and how to provide mental health referrals.
